1152 – Serial to USB Adapter Guide
1st Generation ActivBoard
2nd Generation ActivBoard
The recommended USB converters for Promethean ActivBoards are Keyspan adapters; in the past we have also supplied the Prolific PL2303 USB-Serial Adapter. The Keyspan adapter converts the ActivBoard serial connection to USB, which means you can continue to use the ActivBoard if your computer does not have a serial port.
The ActivBoard serial cable connects to the adapter, and the USB connector on the adapter should be plugged into your computer.
Before use, ensure you have installed the Keyspan adapter driver. Check the model number on the back of the Keyspan adapter and visit the manufacturer’s website to download the appropriate driver.
If you have problems with your computer communicating with your ActivBoard when using a Keyspan adapter, please follow the steps below:
- Reset the ActivBoard.
- Check the light on the Keyspan adapter. If the light is steady, this means the adapter has been recognised by the computer and the ActivBoard should be interactive.
- If not, check whether there is a red cross on the ActivManager icon in the system tray.
- Make sure the ActivDriver is correctly installed by checking the list of installed programs in Control Panel > Add or Remove programs.
Check the COM port the Keyspan adapter is looking for by opening Device Manager and expanding the Ports menu.
Once you have found the COM port, right click the ActivManager in your system tray, select Control Panel and then the Connections tab. Select the correct COM port from the dropdown list and click and then click Connect. Should the red cross on the ActivManager icon remain, click Find to search for the COM port.
Once you have selected the COM port, reboot your computer, leaving the ActivBoard and Keyspan adapter connected.
If the ActivBoard is not detected by the computer, you may wish to consider installing an older version of ActivDriver. Please see article 1163 for further infomation.
