USB 3.0 hardware can be visually identified by their blue connectors. USB 1.0 and 2.0 connectors are generally grey.
To determine whether your computer has a USB 3.0 port, check Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
USB.org recommends maximum cable lengths for their cables to ensure optimum performance in terms of transferring power and data between a device and computer.
The maximum recommended cable length for a USB 2.0 cable is 5 metres/15 feet.
The maximum recommended cable length for a USB 3.0 cable is 3 metres/9 feet.
ActivBoards and ActivPanels are USB 2.0 devices – meaning the maximum cable length should not exceed 5m when connecting to a USB 2.0 port on a computer. However, if the computer you are connecting to has a chipset containing USB 3.0, the length of USB cable from the computer to the device should not exceed 3m in accordance with USB.org’s recommendations. You may also find that if your chipset contains both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, a 5m cable is too long even when connected to a USB 2.0 port. This is purely because the USB 3.0 drivers take precedence on the chipset.
Whilst there are products on the market that can enhance the signal strength over longer lengths (USB booster solutions), our products are tested and supported only with the cables provided with the device, therefore we cannot provide support for non-Promethean supplied cables.
If experiencing issues with connectivity to your device, check with the computer/chipset manufacturer to see if there are any updated drivers available for the USB chipset and ensure the cable does not exceed USB.org’s recommended cable length.
